Farmers and ranchers have an opportunity to sign up for federal funds to install conservation practices through the West Maui Coral Reef Initiative, according to an announcement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service.
The first application period ends Oct. 19, and a second period ends Dec. 21.
The program is one of 15 landscape conservation initiatives addressing regional resource concerns, the agency said.
Applicants will typically meet a conservation service specialist at the landowner's property, and the official will discuss production goals and identify conservation practices to address specific concerns. Applicants that meet eligibility requirements may receive funding assistance.
The aim of the partnership between the service and farmers is to improve water quality and coral reef health by increasing stewardship practices that reduce and prevent sediment and nutrient runoff.
The initiative covers West Maui, Lahaina, Kahakuloa, Waihee, Wailuku, Waikapu and Maalaea areas.
